Boulder Colorado

If I could only use one word to sum up Boulder, Colorado it would be “wow”! This is one of the most naturally pretty places I’ve ever been.
Normally, I think of beautiful cities as places with some natural beauty which has been improved by man. For example, San Francisco. But then there are places like Boulder which simply need no improvement.
Boulder has more “Top 10” rankings than just about any place you can imagine (seriously, check out that link). And from what I saw, it deserves every one.
I checked out only a few of the things Boulder had to offer on a Sunday afternoon. I started out at the Celestial Seasoning’s tea factory by taking the free tour. If you‘re a fan of tea, this place smells like heaven! It was seriously awesome, and I recommend the stop. If possible, go during a weekday so that you can see all of the machines working. On the weekend you don’t get to see that, but at least you can hear the tour guide better.
Interestingly, outside of the factory there were large fields which had hundreds of prairie dog mounds. I had never really seen one before, but these little guys were quite cute, although I’m sure the locals consider them a menace since they do tons of damage to plants, etc.
Next I decided to put the little All Wheel Drive Subaru Outback I rented to good use by following John Fielder’s Best of Colorado guidebook‘s advice and taking the Switzerland Trial on an off-road excursion. John lists this path as being “easy”, and I’d agree.
I went down it about a mile or two before I decided that the trail was a little rough and I didn’t want to risk the little Subaru. Any Jeep or 4WD truck would have had no problem whatsoever, and the next time I get to Boulder I will be doing this again – the right way!
Along the way to and from the Switzerland Trail, CO 119 runs right along the Boulder Creek. This beautiful little creek was jam packed with people inner-tubing down it. The Boulder Creek Path parallels the creek through town and you can supposedly get a map at the Chamber of Commerce. Map or not, I would highly recommend finding the creek and at least taking a stroll down by the water, if not through it. This is a perfect summer time spot.
My final stop in Boulder was to visit the four block long, pedestrian only, Pearl Street Mall. This shopping area reminded me of one that is similar in Santa Monica, CA or another I‘ve seen in Thessaloniki, Greece. It is basically a street which has been closed off to vehicles and improved for the sole purpose of pedestrian traffic. The shops are OK, but the real attraction here is the fact that this has been designated a National Historic District. The buildings are beautiful and the entire scene is just cool.
The bottom line is, I didn’t even scratch the surface of what all Boulder has to offer. When planning a trip to the Denver area I recommend at least two to three days in Boulder alone. Oh, and if I was a young person trying to decide where to go to college, I would seriously consider the University of Colorado.

Sonic Booms Explained

I was trying to explain to someone how a sonic boom works when a jet breaks the sound barrier. Usually when I do that once, I like to document it here on the blog. In this case, I actually found a great video that lays it all out!
When an object passes through the air, it creates a series of pressure waves in front of it and behind it, similar to the bow and stern waves created by a boat. These waves travel at the speed of sound, and as the speed of the object increases, the waves are forced together, or compressed, because they cannot “get out of the way” of each other, eventually merging into a single shock wave at the speed of sound. This critical speed is known as Mach 1 and is approximately 1,225 kilometers per hour (761 mph) at sea level.
Now, if you want to make your own sonic boom, just go to a western store and pick up a bull whip. When you crack the whip you’re actually putting enough energy into the tip that it travels faster than the speed of sound. In fact, he whip was the first human invention to break the sound barrier.

5 Minute Avgolemono Soup Recipe

There is a common Greek soup called Avgolemono which is basically a Chicken & Rice soup with a slight lemon flavor that happens to make normal Chicken & Rice soup pale by comparison (In Greek the “avgo” means egg and the “lemono” is lemon). The only problem is that traditional Avgolemono soup takes hours to prepare and, while the payoff is fantastic, most people just don’t have the time to dedicate to that sort of venture.
Luckily I’ve come up with a suitable alternative which will render 90% of the great taste with 5% of the effort! On top of that, this dish can literally be made in 5 minutes, and will only make one saucepan and one measuring cup dirty! Here is how you make it:
Ingredients:
1 Large Can (26 oz.) of Campbell’s Chicken & Rice Soup1 Cup Milk3 Egg YolksParsleyFresh Ground Pepper1 Large Lemon
Tools Necessary:
1 Large Saucepan1 Large Glass Measuring CupWire Wisk
Follow these simple instructions once you’ve got your ingredients ready.
Pour the Campbell’s Soup, plus one third additional can of water, into a large sauce pan and turn the stove on high temperature.Pour 1 cup of milk into a large measuring cup.Add 3 egg yolks to the milk in the measuring cup.Add 1 tablespoon of parsley and fresh ground pepper to the measuring cup.Wisk the contents of the measuring cup thoroughly.About this time, the soup is normally beginning to boil. Once it does, stir it with the wisk a bit then turn off the burner.While stirring the soup constantly with the wisk, slowly pour the milk / egg mixture into the soup.Once the mixture has been combined, turn the burner back on and let the soup simmer for a couple of minutes.In the meantime, rinse the measuring cup then squeeze one large lemon into it. Remove all seeds.Finally, stir the lemon juice into the soup.
A few notes:
You must add the milk/egg mixture into the hot soup slowly or the egg will solidify and become chunky like Chinese egg drop soup. We don’t want that here.You can NOT substitute lemon juice in a bottle for the fresh squeezed lemon. If you don‘t have a lemon, don’t make this soup!If you’d like, you can add some additional chopped chicken, either fresh or from a can, to make the soup a little meatier.
That’s all! Serve up a heaping bowl and enjoy it with your family. Normally one bowl of this stuff will really fill you up, unlike normal Chicken and Rice soup.

Movie Review: Frost/Nixon

The other day at the AMC Best Movie Showcase, the final movie of the night was Frost/Nixon. I had actually thought about leaving the theatre and skipping this movie, but was glad that I made the decision to stick it out and watch.
Frost/Nixon is “A dramatic retelling of the post-Watergate television interviews between British talk-show host David Frost and former president Richard Nixon.” This is the most famous of all of the Nixon interviews and ultimately the one that really sank him. Primarily due to the fact that Nixon answered one of Frost’s question:
When the President does it, that means it is not illegal.
I thought the movie was fantastic. It could have been extremely boring and dry, but they managed to essentially show how difficult it was for this particular interview to actually happen, and how close it was of a disaster to Frost and his team. Essentially, the entire filming was saved during the final interview with Nixon.

The Change Wheel

As a follow up to my post from a few days ago about 7 Skills of Change Masters, this article is going to focus on a context for change management – again as laid out by Dr. Rosabeth Moss Kanter, a recognized expert in the field of change management and Professor at Harvard Business School.
In her book e-Volve, Dr. Kanter set forth a framework for managing change which she dubbed The Change Wheel. It’s appropriate that she treats the concept of change as one which has no real beginning or end, because the process needs to be continually taking place.
In other words, once any change process is coming to completion, another change process should be beginning anew.

The Change Wheel

As a follow up to my post from a few days ago about 7 Skills of Change Masters, this article is going to focus on a context for change management – again as laid out by Dr. Rosabeth Moss Kanter, a recognized expert in the field of change management and Professor at Harvard Business School.
In her book e-Volve, Dr. Kanter set forth a framework for managing change which she dubbed The Change Wheel. It’s appropriate that she treats the concept of change as one which has no real beginning or end, because the process needs to be continually taking place.
In other words, once any change process is coming to completion, another change process should be beginning anew.

The “Bad Date” Registry

I‘ve been married all of my adult life, and boy am I glad. Being a nice guy, hopefully I’d never have the misfortune to show up on Don’t Date Him Girl, but I kinda feel a little pity for guys that do.
This site is basically designed for women to let other women know who to look out for. From one standpoint it’s a really great concept because if someone is really bad (like this guy seems to be) the site provides a place to warn others.
But you gotta wonder how many guys are getting stuff posted about them that are just plain false because someone decided to be mean after a breakup, etc.

Boulder Colorado

If I could only use one word to sum up Boulder, Colorado it would be “wow”! This is one of the most naturally pretty places I’ve ever been.
Normally, I think of beautiful cities as places with some natural beauty which has been improved by man. For example, San Francisco. But then there are places like Boulder which simply need no improvement.
Boulder has more “Top 10” rankings than just about any place you can imagine (seriously, check out that link). And from what I saw, it deserves every one.
I checked out only a few of the things Boulder had to offer on a Sunday afternoon. I started out at the Celestial Seasoning’s tea factory by taking the free tour. If you‘re a fan of tea, this place smells like heaven! It was seriously awesome, and I recommend the stop. If possible, go during a weekday so that you can see all of the machines working. On the weekend you don’t get to see that, but at least you can hear the tour guide better.
Interestingly, outside of the factory there were large fields which had hundreds of prairie dog mounds. I had never really seen one before, but these little guys were quite cute, although I’m sure the locals consider them a menace since they do tons of damage to plants, etc.
Next I decided to put the little All Wheel Drive Subaru Outback I rented to good use by following John Fielder’s Best of Colorado guidebook‘s advice and taking the Switzerland Trial on an off-road excursion. John lists this path as being “easy”, and I’d agree.
I went down it about a mile or two before I decided that the trail was a little rough and I didn’t want to risk the little Subaru. Any Jeep or 4WD truck would have had no problem whatsoever, and the next time I get to Boulder I will be doing this again – the right way!
Along the way to and from the Switzerland Trail, CO 119 runs right along the Boulder Creek. This beautiful little creek was jam packed with people inner-tubing down it. The Boulder Creek Path parallels the creek through town and you can supposedly get a map at the Chamber of Commerce. Map or not, I would highly recommend finding the creek and at least taking a stroll down by the water, if not through it. This is a perfect summer time spot.
My final stop in Boulder was to visit the four block long, pedestrian only, Pearl Street Mall. This shopping area reminded me of one that is similar in Santa Monica, CA or another I‘ve seen in Thessaloniki, Greece. It is basically a street which has been closed off to vehicles and improved for the sole purpose of pedestrian traffic. The shops are OK, but the real attraction here is the fact that this has been designated a National Historic District. The buildings are beautiful and the entire scene is just cool.
The bottom line is, I didn’t even scratch the surface of what all Boulder has to offer. When planning a trip to the Denver area I recommend at least two to three days in Boulder alone. Oh, and if I was a young person trying to decide where to go to college, I would seriously consider the University of Colorado.

Sonic Booms Explained

I was trying to explain to someone how a sonic boom works when a jet breaks the sound barrier. Usually when I do that once, I like to document it here on the blog. In this case, I actually found a great video that lays it all out!
When an object passes through the air, it creates a series of pressure waves in front of it and behind it, similar to the bow and stern waves created by a boat. These waves travel at the speed of sound, and as the speed of the object increases, the waves are forced together, or compressed, because they cannot “get out of the way” of each other, eventually merging into a single shock wave at the speed of sound. This critical speed is known as Mach 1 and is approximately 1,225 kilometers per hour (761 mph) at sea level.
Now, if you want to make your own sonic boom, just go to a western store and pick up a bull whip. When you crack the whip you’re actually putting enough energy into the tip that it travels faster than the speed of sound. In fact, he whip was the first human invention to break the sound barrier.
